🚨 When NOT to Notarize – Real-Life Examples & Expert Advice

Dear Notary Family,

As a notary, it’s just as important to know when NOT to notarize as it is to know how to perform one. Failing to follow proper guidelines can put your commission—and your reputation—at risk.

Here are two key situations where you must refuse a notarization:

1️⃣ Signer Lacks Proper Identification – If a signer cannot provide a valid, government-issued ID and no credible witnesses are available, you must decline the notarization to prevent fraud.

2️⃣ Signer is Not Willing or Aware – If a signer seems confused, disoriented, or is being pressured to sign, you must refuse to proceed. A notary’s role includes ensuring that signers are acting willingly and with full understanding.
